Rani of Jhansi, also known as Lakshmibai, was a prominent figure in the Indian Rebellion of 1857. Born as Manikarnika Tambe in 1828 in Varanasi, she received an unconventional upbringing for a woman of that era, including training in horsemanship, swordsmanship, and martial arts.
She married Maharaja Gangadhar Rao Newalkar of Jhansi in 1842 and became the Rani of Jhansi. In 1851, she gave birth to a son who died after four months. Following the death of their son, the Maharaja adopted his cousin's son, Damodar Rao, a day before his own death in 1853.
The British East India Company, under the Doctrine of Lapse, refused to recognize Damodar Rao as the rightful heir and annexed Jhansi. Lakshmibai vehemently opposed this annexation, declaring "Main apni Jhansi nahi doongi" (I will not give up my Jhansi).
When the Indian Rebellion broke out in 1857, Lakshmibai joined the rebel forces. She bravely defended Jhansi against the British forces. After a fierce battle, she escaped Jhansi and joined forces with Tatya Tope. Together, they captured Gwalior.
Lakshmibai died fighting valiantly in battle on June 18, 1858, near Gwalior. Her courage, bravery, and patriotism made her an iconic figure in the Indian independence movement. She is remembered as a symbol of resistance against British rule and a national hero.
